Idiom é a expressão cujo sentido não vem da soma das palavras. Traduzir peça por peça leva ao lugar errado, e é por isso que eles precisam ser aprendidos inteiros, com a situação junto.
Um primeiro grupo segue uma lógica que o português acompanha, e esses você aprende rápido: break the ice (quebrar o gelo), in the long run (a longo prazo), hit the nail on the head (acertar na mosca), cost an arm and a leg (custar os olhos da cara), keep an eye on (ficar de olho em), at the end of the day (no final das contas), on the same page (alinhados).
O segundo grupo é o que engana, porque a imagem em inglês não é a nossa. Repare em cada um:
out of the blue é do nada, de repente. Não tem a ver com a cor. off the top of my head é de cabeça, sem consultar nada. get the hang of it é pegar o jeito, depois de praticar. ring a bell é soar familiar: the name rings a bell. take it with a grain of salt é não levar ao pé da letra, desconfiar um pouco. play it by ear é decidir conforme as coisas acontecem, sem plano. get cold feet é amarelar, dar para trás na hora por nervosismo. a piece of cake é moleza, muito fácil. under the weather é estar meio adoentado, indisposto. the last straw é a gota d'água, o problema final que faz alguém desistir.
O erro típico não é usar o idiom errado: é traduzir o do português ao pé da letra. Amarelar não vira turn yellow, e ao pé da letra não vira by the foot of the letter.
Palavras novas de passagem: joke (piada), exaggerate (exagerar), matters (importa), place someone (lembrar de onde conhece alguém).
