Perguntas indiretas

A pergunta indireta educada abre com Do you know..., Could you tell me... ou I wonder..., e dentro dela a ordem volta a ser afirmativa: Do you know where the station is? (não where is). Para sim ou não, usa if ou whether: I wonder if she is coming.

A pergunta indireta é mais educada, e o erro comum é manter a inversão da pergunta direta. Where is the station? é direta. Ao colocar Do you know na frente, o inglês desfaz a inversão: Do you know where the station is? O sujeito volta para antes do verbo. Em português, a ordem quase não muda, então a tentação é dizer Do you know where is the station.

Perguntar direto nem sempre soa educado. Where is the bank? funciona, mas Could you tell me where the bank is? é mais gentil, e é assim que se pergunta a um estranho na rua ou numa entrevista.

O truque tem duas partes. Primeiro, uma abertura educada: Do you know..., Could you tell me..., Do you have any idea..., I wonder... Segundo, e é aqui que mora o erro, dentro da pergunta a ordem volta a ser afirmativa.

Pergunta direta: Where is the station? (verbo antes do sujeito) Pergunta indireta: Do you know where the station is? (sujeito antes do verbo)

O sujeito the station volta para antes do is. O mesmo com as outras: What time is it? vira Could you tell me what time it is? How much does it cost? vira Do you know how much it costs? Repare que o does some e o verbo carrega o s: it costs.

Quando a pergunta é de sim ou não, entra o if (ou whether): Is she coming? vira I wonder if she is coming.

O erro do português é natural: nossa ordem quase não muda entre a pergunta direta e a indireta, então a inversão inglesa fica grudada. Treine desfazê-la: depois de Do you know, ninguém inverte.

Palavras novas de passagem: I wonder (eu me pergunto, queria saber), over there (ali, lá), any idea (alguma ideia).
